Why We Left Galveston: A Journey to Peace and Adventure
Living in Galveston has its perks. The beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and strong sense of community create a lively atmosphere. However, the reality of hurricane season always loomed over us. Each year, we faced the threat of storms, which meant preparing for evacuations, potential property damage, and uncertainty. After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which caused widespread flooding and devastation, we realized we needed a long-term solution.
We wanted a place where we could build something lasting without the constant worry of natural disasters. Burkeville, located well inland, offered that peace of mind. It’s far enough from the coast to avoid hurricanes’ worst effects but close enough to enjoy the natural beauty of East Texas.
The Search for the Right Property: Overcoming Challenges
Finding the perfect piece of land was more challenging than we expected. Burkeville is surrounded by dense forests and undeveloped properties, making it difficult to scout locations. Many parcels were covered in thick underbrush, fallen trees, and uneven terrain. We spent weekends hiking through the woods, sometimes getting lost or scratched by the brush.
We wanted a property that wasn’t just land but had potential for development. Our goal was to create an RV park that felt welcoming and comfortable, with enough space for amenities and a community center. After months of searching, we finally found a property that stood out: an existing RV park with a house on the land that needed remodeling.
Discovering the RV Park with a House: A Game-Changer
The moment we saw the RV park, we felt a spark of excitement. The site had a rustic charm and a layout that could be improved without starting from scratch. The house on the property was old but sturdy, perfect for remodeling into a welcoming office and residence.
This find was a game-changer. Instead of building everything from the ground up, we could focus on upgrading and personalizing the space. The RV park already had basic infrastructure like hookups and roads, which saved us time and money.
Our Plans for the Community Center and Property Improvements: Building Connections
One of our biggest goals is to build a community center on the property. We want the RV park to be more than just a place to park a trailer. It should be a space where guests can gather, relax, and connect. The community center will host events, provide a lounge area, and offer amenities like laundry and showers.
We also plan to improve the landscaping, clear some of the dense underbrush, and add walking trails. These changes will make the park more inviting and enjoyable for visitors. We’re committed to preserving the natural beauty of the area while making it accessible and comfortable.
Challenges and Lessons Learned: Growth Through Adversity
Starting this journey taught us a lot about patience and persistence. The dense underbrush wasn’t just a physical obstacle; it symbolized the hard work ahead. Clearing land, dealing with permits, and remodeling the house required time and effort.
We also learned the importance of community. Burkeville’s residents have been welcoming and helpful, offering advice and support. Building relationships here is just as important as building the RV park itself.
Embracing the Adventure Ahead: A New Chapter
As we embark on this new chapter, we are filled with excitement and anticipation. Our move from Galveston to Burkeville marks the beginning of a journey that holds great promise. We’re eager to turn this property into a thriving RV park that serves travelers and locals alike.
If you’re considering a similar move or project, remember that the journey will have ups and downs, but the rewards are worth it. Whether you’re escaping hurricane risks or chasing a dream, finding the right place and being ready to work hard will make all the difference.
